LBCC StudentsFirst Year Experience

First Year Experience (FYE) learning communities bring together the collaborative efforts of four departments at LBCC: Counseling, English, Math, and Learning and Academic Resources. FYE offers learning communities designed for students who would like to receive extra support in the first year of college. These communities promote success in the math and English courses that students often find challenging as they begin their college careers.

FYE students join a community of dedicated instructors and learners for a two-semester sequence that fulfills pre-collegiate or transfer requirements.

We provide services such as orientation to college life and expectations, instruction in study skills essential for academic success, strategies to succeed in selected general education courses and continued guidance in preparation for transfer to a four-year college/university.

Leaders Across Campus Leaders Across Campus

Leaders Across Campus is a mentor program which represents the Spirit of Long Beach City College.”  Our motto of Who I Am Makes A Difference truly becomes evident as students help students succeed.

Third semester students with a 2.75 GPA or higher, share their experiences with incoming freshmen, international students, or students with disabilities who want to transfer.  The purpose is to promote the academic and social development of first-year students during their adjustment to college.  The goal is to ease the transition, to be a friend, and to help new students succeed in college.  Mentoring is a GREAT experience.  A reciprocal relationship of sharing and learning is achieved.  For new students, having a Mentor may mean the difference between staying in school and dropping out.

Mentoring is an opportunity to demonstrate your genuine “heart of service” to others, to be a leader on campus, and to make a difference in someone else’s life.  We are always looking for hardworking, motivated students who have the desire to help someone new on campus.  Our program offers training, special events, fundraiser's, and social activities where you can interact with other students in the program.

Puente Program Puente Program

The mission of the Puente Project is to increase the number of educationally under served students who enroll in four-year colleges and universities, earn degrees, and return to the community as leaders and mentors to succeeding generations. To participate in Puente students must be eligible to enroll in English 105 (4 units) and Counseling 2 (3units) in the Fall Semester and English 1 (3units) in the Spring Semester. Puente students commit to one year of English instruction focusing on the study of Latino culture, participate in sustained counseling, mentoring, and events outside of class. Puente works to give students the skills and information they need to succeed- writing skills, academic counseling, career counseling, financial aid information, mentoring, and field trips to universities and colleges. Even after students graduate from the program and transfer, Puente continues to offer the support and encouragement students need to complete their college education and career goals. The Puente Project is open to all students.

High School students entering LBCC are encouraged to take the LBCC placement test and to schedule a counseling appointment to discuss their interest in Puente. Counseling appointments with Ms. Andujo, the Puente Counselor can be made by calling (562) 938-4561on Mondays or in person in the counseling office at the  LAC campus. Information on the Puente Project is available in the Counseling Offices at both LAC and PCC. For additional information on the Puente Project visit the statewide Puente website (http://www.puente.net)
